Oceana Coffee Roasts Its Way to Silver at the Golden Bean World Finals!
The excitement was palpable when the Oceana Coffee team learned that this year's Golden Bean World Competition—the world’s largest roasting competition—would be held in Antigua, Guatemala. This competition offered a unique chance to join our friends in the coffee industry, tour specialty coffee farms, and compete with some of the world’s best roasters all in one place—an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.
What is the Golden Bean World Competition?
Our brand has proudly participated in the Golden Bean North America (GBNA) competition every year since 2015, with our co-founder and head roaster, Scott Angelo, winning the prestigious title of Overall Best Roaster in 2016. Scott has also served as the head judge for GBNA’s annual competition since then. This year, we were thrilled to return to the competition floor, this time on the world stage.
To qualify for the Golden Bean World Competition, roasters must have earned a silver, gold, or overall medal in a regional competition. With this in mind, we embarked on the journey from Miami to Guatemala City, followed by a scenic two-hour drive to the beautiful and historic city of Antigua, where the event was hosted. There, we joined top roasters and café owners from across the globe, including representatives from the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and East Asia.
An Unforgettable Experience
Words like thankful, humbled, and grateful don’t fully capture the magnitude of this experience. Over the course of two days, more than two hundred coffees from around the world were judged on their flavor, body, sweetness, and acidity. Scott Angelo, Amy Angelo, and Amy Duell from the Oceana Coffee team were among the 50 judges who helped make this incredible competition possible. To support us, Scott and Amy’s children, Jordan and Grace, joined the team to ensure smooth operations behind the scenes, running coffees from the engine room to the judges' tables.
Each competitor is allowed to enter only one coffee per category in the Golden Bean World Competition, with the categories being espresso, milk-based espresso, and filter. While it’s common for roasters who have succeeded in regional competitions to expect similar success, the world-level competition presents an entirely different challenge. At this prestigious event, you're up against only the best roasters, and it's your roasting skills that determine whether or not you succeed. With just one opportunity to showcase your craft, even experienced roasters can leave without a medal. This serves as a powerful reminder that the Golden Bean World Competition is a true benchmark for the world’s top roasting talent.
A Moment to Celebrate
We are beyond thrilled to announce that Oceana Coffee brought home a silver medal in the Milk Based Espresso category. This win is a testament to Scotty's unwavering dedication to sourcing and roasting the finest coffees from around the world. Our silver medal winning milk based espresso blend will soon be available for a limited time on our website, and we can’t wait to share this victory with you.
Thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to celebrating many more milestones with you!
